The Deadlands Chronicle
Cult of Asura
This clandestine organization has risen in the shadows of the Inquisition itself. The Inquisitors consider this cult to be among the greatest threats to the safety of the Church and its people, and are committed to rooting-out its leaders and eliminating them.
The cult itself formed because of rumors that a malevolent presence had taken residence within the lands known the the Bloodfields. The founders of the cult believed that the accumulated negative spiritual energy left behind from the pain, anger, despair, and terror of the countless soldiers who fell upon those lands had somehow coalesced into a demon that now haunts the battlefield. The cultists claim that they can make contact with the entity by entering a psychotic state with the help of psychoactive drugs, and that they have even managed to communicate with it.
Adherents to the cult engage in profane ceremonies involving tournaments of mortal combat, ritualistic murder, and sadistic bacchanalia involving psychoactive drugs. Their belief is that they can reach a heightened state of being by eschewing rational thought and surrendering themselves completely to their primal emotions. Among these, they consider rage to be the most potent, and a person’s capacity for violence to be a true measure of a person’s spiritual strength and enlightenment.
