The Deadlands Chronicle
The Imperial City of Atalia is considered the center of civilization. Located where the Aden River empties into the Gulf, it acts as the portal between the cities of the Core Territories (all of which rely on the Great River for trade) and Shai’il. As the capitol city of the Empire, it contains the headquarters of the Imperial Legion, as well as the Palace of the Imperator, a magnificent structure that rivals even the Cathedral of the Holy Seraph in its grandeur.
Once one of the largest cities in the world, the fall of the Magic Empire took its toll and much of Atalia is now abandoned. Without the magic of the Mage Lords to sustain it, the population of Atalia was forced out of the city and back into the agrarian lifestyle of subsistence farming. As one of the most vital port cities on the Northern continent, control of Atalia was constantly contested during the war torn years following the Profound Disjunction, and as such, it has been sacked on numerous occasions, stripping much of the wealth and splendor it once boasted, and leaving much of the outlying areas in ruins. Even the central districts that were spared the devastation of war have not escaped the decay of neglect.
Since the rise of the Empire of Augustus Tessius, much of the city has been restored and reconstructed, including the magnificent Imperial Palace and the massive harbor complex. Though merely a shadow of the glory it held in the past, the Imperial City now stands as a grim but impressive monument to the strength of the Empire and the resilience of civilization.
